Really? A pair of garden variety glasses with a little plaque glued on them that says Battlestar Galactica? You'd think the Smithsonian would dedicate more time to a real historical piece. I think I'll glue a Star Trek plaque on my sunglasses and donate them to Smithsonian. They'll spend hundreds of hours trying to figure it out 30 years from now...

the universal mark on the inside makes it more official. You would think there would be some official record of them in this case.
That is what makes it a mystery. Not an overly exciting one, but still.
If it was just the outside plaques, it could be a one off or custom job.

This is pretty lame. There were a zillion products that had the Galactica name slapped on them in 1978. This was on the heels of Star Wars and nobody wanted to miss this bandwagon! There were so many things that had NOTHING to do with Galactica that were branded:
Silly putty Wallets Guns Old Captain Lazer dolls Colorforms Glassware Watches ad nausium!
It's really not surprising to see these glasses, but it's ridiculous that a) the Smithsonian has them and b) that anyone spent 10 seconds looking at them.

Maybe they were on set reading glasses for reviewing those late night script changes? Total shot in the dark.
