I just wish we could get an official announcement from them regarding the series on bluray.

I just got the series on eBay for DVD. Since I don't have a blu ray player, waiting for the series to be released on blu ray doesn't apply to me. I actually spent Christmas Day watching episodes while I was at work. Such epic stories...

Getting G80 would be worth getting the blu ray. Of course I would have to break down and buy a blu ray (and the only reason I don't is because I am lazy and don't want to upgrade all my movies to DVD).

Lol. If Bluray players didn't play DVDs I wouldn't have bothered. Why buy something that makes my entire collection obsolete?
I was finally converted when I saw the Bluray of "The Last Starfighter". To this day it holds up as one of the best HD rasters I have ever seen.

I have ordered the German Battlestar Galactica Blu-Ray set and from the sounds of it, will have to order a multi region BD player as well (It has been reported on the forum at blu-ray.com, that this German set is Region B locked). B&H has a Sony for a little over $200.00. I am still waiting for the set, so these comments are based on I am seeing from others at the Blu-ray.com forum. I have seen a few screen caps of the BD set that compare it to the DVD set and I can safely say it is not an standard definition uprez, but is in fact an HD scan. I had hoped that like the UK Space: 1999 S1 set, it would be region A & B - The five Space: 1999 BDs were identical to the US release, except for the printing on the label side. The microprint number in the center clear part of the discs were the same, so they were stamped from the same master. (The DVDs with the bonus materials were a different matter - region 2 and some differences in content due to licensing differences.)
I am glad to hear that SOASW is the original broadcast version (the first report, which was later corrected, was that it was the theatrical version presented in 4:3). The discs have 5.1 DTS-HD MA on both the English and German tracks. This all made sense when I thought about it. When the original series DVD R1 NTSC set was released in 2003 (1978-79, No G80), I remember reading a review at thedigitalbits.com that stated that Universal had made HD scans for the DVD set. The audio was remixed for 5.1 at that time as well for the DD 5.1 tracks of the DVDs. Since others on the Blu-ray forum have said that it does not appear that any cleaning up has been done, I think that these Blu-Rays have come from those HD scans back in 2003! (So Universal has been sitting on HD masters for ten years.) I can't find the DVD review on the digital bits site - maybe because it is from so long ago and that site has been upgraded since then, but I do remember reading that the film was scanned in HD. Until now The R1 NTSC DVD set was the only complete digital release that represented the series as it was originally broadcast on ABC. The R2/4 PAL DVDs, as well as the iTunes release represent the syndication package with SOASW split into one hour broadcast segments and both have mono audio.
Now a few years later when the Galactica: 1980 was released on DVD (R1 NTSC), it had the original mono audio, and I imagine this is what is on the Blu-Rays - the original mono duplicated to the left and right front tracks.
Again, I am glad for the lossless DTS-HD MA as well. (I once compared a brief bit of audio from the "2001: A Space Odyssey" BD - some simple dialog of HAL with background ship noise using the 5.1 DD vs. the 5.1 PCM and was amazed at the lossy data compression distortion I then could easily hear in the DD track!)
I will report back when I have received the set - and have a player that can play it.

Glad to hear, Ed--let us hear your full review!
Also, if you have a computer with a BD-ROM drive--you can unlock the region code....at least for a few viewings.

Wow! Those images look pretty clean! I hope the episodes aren't too cropped though.

"The set includes not just all 24 episodes of the original Battlestar Galactica in 1080p, but also all 10 episodes of the spinoff series Galactica 1980 in 1080p too (all pillarboxed - black bars on the sides - to preserve the original 4x3 TV aspect ratio)!"
Sounds amazing. I think it is cool how they have both in higher quality.

I can't believe Universal is stiffing us again. I'll never understand that studio as long as I live. The DVD set sold like hot cakes. Oh well, I guess I'm buying German!
