With members (and prospective members) spread so widely perhaps it's time to start talking about standards for convention displays? And possibly gathering resources for people to share?
Thoughts or suggestions?

This is a great question. Surprised there aren't any responses yet. ?
Having returned from Celebration V and seeing the HUGE room display the 501 had, this group definitely has its work cut out for it. LOL
At the very least some type of folded pamphlet should be designed listing what the group is, does, etc.

We do currently have 2 folding handouts that can be sent to people for conventions. There were older threads about them.
One of the things we really need done with a website is posting these online for people to download and print at will.
As for room type dsplays, we do have our hands full, but some of us are also 501st so we have experience doing it. lol. it will be discussed in full though. It is also something that will have to be done reginally, since transporting some of this stuff could costs hundreds of dollars.

I'm not sure how I missed this! We've discussed quite a few things about the table situation. We've agreed that it needs to be something special so bring on the ideas!
I'm going for something that has a structure built up around the table that can be decked out. I've been working with some folding tables to come up with something slim enough. If there is a top to it we can display some stuff on top to pull people in.
I'm all for an actual booth on the floor for our debut con. After that we can join the fan tables. It will cost us though. I think it was around 800 last time I checked. I'm in for $100! Possibly a bit more but we need to distribute the weight a bit.

Sorry, guys. I didn't realize you had already designed a club pamphlet.
Okay, so who is constructing the full-sized Viper?? LOL!!
CV had some AMAZING displays - including a full sized TIE Interceptor and a half-size AT-AT. People were in awe looking at them.

Actually Gee2 is in the process of constructing a full sized viper model, inside and out. His shots so far are fantastic.

Gee2's Viper will only be about 2/3rds of the viper I believe. I don't think he's doing the engines on it. I also know that Charybdis has a cockpit mock up he's used in his Callisto mini eps. Now, I missed CV, but I have been able to see pics of the full sized Tie Interceptor, Rebel Snow Speeder, and the Falcon set pieces that the Belgium Garrison shipped over for the event. (I'm pretty sure that LFL had a hand in the shipping as well) all of there stuff (yes, there is more) is DAMN impressive. And it'd be great to start planning out what we COULD do. But there are a few things we need to remember first. Number 1 BUDGET. Building these things will cost money. 2. We are a group just starting out. Even if we have the people we would need with building experience. We're stretched thin right now. We then have the trouble of coming together for the builds, and then where is it stored? How is it shipped to local cons? ( back to money lol) I'm the bald pumpkin lol I have had the pleasure of trooping alongside the LFL owned 3/4 scale X-Wing. It was at CIII and CIV. I also trooped witht he X-Wing in Times Square, NYC. (AMAZING!!!) Even concidering that even this scale Fighter is bigger then a Viper, It takes a semi Trailer and a Forklift to transport the X-Wing anywhere. Assembly on site isn't too bad, but usually takes a crew of 5 to do right. (same with disassembly) This ship is made of Fiberglass, Wood and steel. There is a steal tube running the entire lenght of the ship and a Steel wire from built off that. Sure, if we built a Viper, we could do it all out of wood. But we'd be trading weight (wood being lighter then steel lol) for durability. In a con setting, unless completely roped off and guarded, people will touch the Viper, and the more people touch it, the more the chance for damage. My suggestion would be for everyone to hold the ig ideas, and start smaller. How can we build a bridge backdrop? or have a Curtain printed up of the bridge. Maybe a Hanger background. Something for people to get their pictures in front of. somethign 2 prople can set up, and take down, and that can be folded to fit into any car. then build up from there. Build Athena's Bridge station to place in front of the bridge background. (the Background SHOULD include the starmap lol) You can take pics of people sitting at her station with Warriors leaning over, there were how many promotional pics of that station? The next grand move, or build would be a cockpit simulator. Basically just the cockpit section of a viper. You can build it on dolly wheels to move around. You would require something bigger to move it. but people would get more excited for picture of them in a Viper. When I visited the USS Intrepid, right before it's refitting recently, They had a A-4 Skyhawk Cockpit simulator you could sit in: We could do the same, have a canopy frame close over them (no glass or anything for better pictures) have a helmet they can wear, and Charge $5 Charity donation to sit in it. Have a polaroid camera there to hand pictures to the people. We just all have to remember to think small for now, and build up to having 17 Vipers within the Squadron. Not that I haven't already thought about how to build a Full sized Viper that could be converted from a Series Viper to a Scarlet Viper at will no, or course I haven't thought about that lol.

I was looking for a tektronix 4052 work station for exactally that. Everything I found cost a fortune. Does anyone know someone with a pile of obsolete computers? Even a non functioning shell would do. It would be fun ripping it apart and putting in modern equipment.

I was thinking of painting the "shell" to a table grey and put a bunch of mock rivets all over it to make it seem in universe. We could try to get hold of some of the set dressing that Chris Pappas used to reproduce. Having a few people in uniform sitting at something that looks similar to a helm station would be cool.
Normally I would say this is way too much work for a con, but we need to make a big splash! We're the new kids on the block.
BSG.org has offered to send along uniforms to sell at the show. People could actually try the uniforms on and buy them right then and there!
Also...since we're having trouble getting people to submit their pictures, we could make arrangements to do so at the convention. They could show up in uniform, we could take the pictures we need and have them fill out a small paper to give us their details.
I like your idea LiveWire! we could just build up bulky monitor shells with green lights to shine out. That would look pretty cool!

for a table display, I wouldn't worry too much about getting the correct computer equipment.
what I was thinking on the train ride home last night was getting a OLD laptop, and somehow seperating the monitor fromt he keyboard/processor. (but keeping it working) Place the monitor in a wood frame and mount the keyboard in a similar one (this will weight next to nothing now) and place it on the table. You keep the functionality of the computer(for things like recruitment) but have the look of the Galactica computers.
ALOT lighter then having a Desktop on the table. We don't need a GOOd laptop, just something with a Notepad. to take notes lol, or to run simple programs similating the BSG computers. A Targeting screen with the Cylon Phalanx appraoching the fleet.

I'm looking at some banner prices/options for "Blackstar Squadron" that I can front the $ for, I have also spoken w/Norvon who owns a large vinyl Viper background banner for use. And yes if I can find a way I will transpor the Viper mock up to SDCC If we break up displays as per our regions/flights we may want to use the 501st/Rebel Legion as benchmarks. Each Garrison or Squad has a logo; example, my area was a part of Mountain Garrison and we (NM) were Dewback Ridge Squad. So at events when we set up we had a large 501st banner for the table with the pamphlets, goodies, etc. and in the background had a smaller Garrison banner and a Squad banner directly below it. I wouldn't say that we follow the same doctrine but we may want to borrow ideas that work. Either way I believe we should definitely come up with a standard approach for all our flights/regions.

Does anyone know of a way we can render a mock up for a booth? This way we can get some visuals.

I agree, we should use the existing groups as a starting point. I think we need to have something that clearly ties us to that sort of organization but also sets us up as the unique entity that we are! I would love for the booth to look in universe, but I'm not tied to that idea by any means.

Ironically, I don't have a Rebel Legion log in anymore, and when I click the link it asks me to log in. that said, I agree on each flight having it's own idenity. A logo for themselves. It's possible to be canon, the officer's club had a bucnh of logos ringing the walls. Backdrops are the easiest way, and if we can get it done and even pass it around for now, that would be great!

Oops! I guess since that thread was in our Events section, it's limited to log in members...anyway, one of our members outdid himself and constructed almost a full size set of blast doors, the ones that are seen on the Trade Federation ship at the beginning of The Phantom Menace where Qui-Gon buries his lightsaber into them to burn them open...

So a couple ideas;
-Standard logos for each Flight, at least in size/shape? -Standard con/event table banner set-up? -Backdrops/backgrounds? Maybe a mock up and backdrop of a hangar on one side of the table and a Pilots ready room on the other, with helmets and/or lasers in racks (this idea was used by both the Rebel Legion and the 501st) or maybe an officers club backdrop with a few Viper jocks standing around to shoot the breeze with recruits/con-goers?
