First off, let me say that I'm posting this for the sake of history, why we all love Dirk Benedict and Starbuck, and that this is just so true. I cannot publicly state that these are my opinions. That disclaimer out of the way, and if you haven't already read this--grab a Coke and a Big Mac, sit down with a fumerello, and read a real treat! The original story is at this link: bighollywood.breitbart.com/dbenedict/2009/01/19/lt-starbuck-lost-in-castration/This rant from Dirk has to be at least a year old, but I love very bit of it!

It's funny, I would never have even seen much of the new series; I stopped watching it during the first season when it came out. However, last year I decided to do a real BSG outfit, so I wanted to pick up the DVD set for reference. I did a search on my local Craigslist, and the new series Blu-ray set came up for cheap, so I bought it. I watched a bunch of it, skipping here and there. My opinion never changed. The best part was seeing Richard Hatch in the show - I'm glad he got a real integral part and not some stupid cameo.

x4 - I tried, I really did.. I refused to watch it at first ( a promise to Richard Hatch at IQM2), then Richard Hatch convinced me to try it at Fantisci Con several years ago, so I netflixed the show and watched the first 2.5 seasons and caught the last half of season three on tv and the first half of season 4. I could not get into it enough to really like the show. I liked parts of the show, but not enough to finish the last half of the last season. I tried to fall in love with the characters the way I did with the Originals, but could not find enough good qualities in any of them to really like them. Oh, there were characters I liked, but none I wanted to be. Who here wouldn't want to be Apollo, Starbuck, Sheba, Boomer etc. You could see yourself rocketing down a launch tube to defend the fleet from the Cylon War Machine fighting along side of these Hero's. I didn't get that with the new show. I even commanded a Fleet in the CDF and reached the rank of Vice Admiral there, and still could not get into the show. After years of trying I finally left the CDF. Even with the greatness of being a fleet commander, a Battlestar Commander it was never as much fun as being on the Battlestar Callisto, a Original Series based fan group. Even when I was just Ensign Skyler wondering what to do, it was fun, it felt like Battlestar....
Richard was great in the show, and I am glad I got to see his parts, and I did like some of the special effects and space battles but still.... not enough to save the series...
In my Universe,Warriors have honor, you don't have a last name, Pyramid is a Card Game, Triad is played by men in way to tight uniforms (come on Glenn, where was the Womens Triad Leage) Frack is spelled with a C, Micron and Centon are times and Starbuck has gonads... Well, she does in the new series as well, but they belong to Lee "Apollo" Adama.

Holy frack! Dirk absolutely NAILED it!!! No wonder I like the dude. I tried SO hard to like that new mess. Hatch was the only aspect I liked. I ended up bailing on it as his role turned in to small cameos.

I think Dirk and I need to sit for a few beers (not cokes) and smoke a few Fumerillos, and just bash this crap they put a classic name on. I haven't seen enough of the new series to get a real feeling on most of the characters, but I hate what they did to the core characters. The Galactica redesign, much like y opinion on the enterprise Redesign is uninspired. (ok, it's CRAP lol) and the Viper Mk VII just doesn't fit the feel of what BSG SHOULD be. I will admit to liking the general shape design of the MK II.
I did like expanding the cast into none warior roles like the maintence Chief. But I think making half the cast Cylons was crap as well.
Gimme a Continuation!!1 please!!!!!!
Let's win the Lottery (several of us) and start doign our own New Voyages for Galactica!!!

So whatever happened to that movie possibility that was to be done in true BSG, not the new stuff?

I feel in the minority here, for I like BOTH series. Obviously for very different reasons. TOS will always be my first and foremost favorite, hands down. When I watch GINO I have to turn off the portion of my brain that contains the knowledge of the original, forever comparing it to the original ruins the enjoyment of a very well written, acted, directed and produced series. (You don't win Peabody awards for being a sucky show). For me it's like comparing apples and oranges, one is not better than the other, they are just different.
That being said I do still wish they had cast a male Starbuck and created a Sheba role for Katie.

And stop it with the stupid home camcorder filming style - I can't stand the constant motion and fast zooms...

As much as I love it, I think we can blame Joss Whedon and Firefly for that one.

a very well written, acted, directed and produced series. My main problem with it was simple. THEY HAD NO PLAN. They basically 'winged it.' For a series with no idea where to go, it was actually pretty good. But it suffered from "The Prisoner" envy. Difference is, The Prisoner was an original work, and had every right to go crazy at the end. Moore should have just pitched an original piece, then all this comparison stuff would never have existed. One of my friends even said to me that if it wasn't for the use of the names of people & ships from TOS, he might haved really loved that series. I concur.

They definitely winged it. They never really did get into the deal with Stardoe at the end there, it was almost like it was tacked on to get them to Earth fast since the series was ending. And a Blu-Ray gripe (maybe it's on the DVD set too?) - why the frack did I have to keep skipping past a "Hello, I'm Ron Moore" thing on every flippin disc? Put it once on the first disc, and be done with it.
You know, if they just went with an original series and perhaps a slightly different storyline to stay away from the Galactica looking for Earth, I probably would have at least tolerated\enjoyed it a bit more.

I really didn't watch the new series until about a month ago, I spent about 2 weeks watching all 76 episodes. I have to admit I did like it, but no where near as much as TOS. I hated what they did with the re-gendering of characters but the show did have some potential. Right around season 3 everything seemed to go downhill and don't even get me started on how they ended the series....major disappointment. After watching the final episode I was like "did I really just watch 75 episodes of this show and this is how it ends?"
I would love to see Katee Sackoff as an original series Warrior though. I think she would look pretty hot in a set of tans.

Dirk's rant is from about seven years ago.
I did enjoy the series, until the end which I think was really botched. It's also too bad that had to rape the name Galactica to try and jumpstart their totally different series.
Probably the worst thing about the new series is that it's a pain in the ass to do web or eBay searches for stuff regarding the original. Way too much static!

Starbuck and Starbuck at a Starbuck's smoking cigars. lol I saw that series of pics a few weeks ago, and just love the look on Dirk's face! In every pic, he looks like he was forced to be there--while she looks happy as can be. I've said it before, and I'll say it again--STARBUCK PEES STANDING UP!!!!!!!
